What You’ll Love About the FCS Education Program:
- You’ll get lots of one-on-one attention and coaching from professors whom you get to know well in our small class learning environment.
- You’ll have an opportunity to undertake six weeks of your student teaching experience overseas in Ireland or in another country of your choosing.
- In 2010, legislation goes into effect requiring financial literacy to be taught in public schools. We prepare you to meet this requirement.
- As early as your freshman year you will be in the schools observing and assisting to build your confidence for working with students.
- Approximately half of your study will be in the area of Family and Consumer Science and half in Education, assuring you are proficient in both.
- Both your education professors and your FCS professors will coach you in your classroom student teaching to ensure you get maximum value from the experience.

Reach & Enhance Your Career Goals
- As a graduate of this program, you will be ready to pass licensure tests to teach your chosen specialization in Family and Consumer Science to youth, grades 7 through 12.
- This year, our College of Education achieved a 96 percent pass rate on the state-mandated Praxis 2 exams and a 100 percent pass rate on state-mandated Praxis 3 exams. When you graduate from the program, you will be prepared to teach.

Professors Who Excel in the Classroom
- Professors work closely with the Ohio Department of Education and help organize regional FCS teachers’ meetings.
- Faculty go to great lengths to introduce students to current issues in Family and Consumer Science. Recent classes have included bringing in guest speakers such as a cancer patient, an interracial family and a couple who married late in life.
- Professors teach every class and closely mentor students through their courses and student teaching experience.

Gain Real World Experience

You will undertake a classroom field experience each year for the first three years of your degree program, which is a real confidence booster for young teachers. During the fourth year, you will student teach for 12 weeks in an FCS classroom. If you wish, you may complete half of your student teaching overseas in Ireland or in another country through arrangements you complete with the Consortium for Overseas Student Teaching (COST) program.

- Meal Management — Explore the components that contribute to the preparation of nutritious meals. Menu planning and shopping, food safety issues, budgeting constraints and specific food recipe preparations in the laboratory will be explored.
- Adult-Child Relationships & Classroom Management — Study the adult-child relationship within the context of the family, the school and the community. Address basic child guidance techniques, and also views on child and adult behavior as part of a broader context.
- Fashion Studio I — Examine apparel construction and design. Study the development of the basic principles, concepts and skills essential for apparel construction.
- Consumer Problems and Financial Management – Delve into consumer issues and problems and learn how to assist individuals and families with major financial management decisions.
