Former Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee will speak at Ashland University on June 28, 2012, as the keynote speaker for the 27th Annual John M. Ashbrook Memorial Dinner.

Sponsored by the Ashbrook Center, the event has hosted many political leaders including Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Colin Powell, Margaret Thatcher and John Boehner.

Ashland University Honors Professor with Taylor Teaching Award

Dr. Perry Corbin is the recipient of Ashland University’s 2012 Taylor Excellence in Teaching Award. Ashland University Provost Dr. Frank Pettigrew presented the award at Ashland University’s Academic Honors Convocation on Sunday, April 15, in the Jack and Deb Miller Chapel.

The award, first presented in 1997, was endowed by former Jeromesville residents the late Edward and Louaine Taylor as a way of supporting high quality teaching at Ashland University.

Pendleton Selected In Seventh Round By Jacksonville Jaguars

Ashland University defensive lineman Jeris Pendleton (Chicago, Ill./Joliet Junior College) was selected in the seventh round of the NFL draft by the Jacksonville Jaguars on April 28. He was the 228th player selected in this year's draft.

"This is big," said Ashland University head coach Lee Owens. "Next week we go back out on the road and you can bet we'll tell everyone we had someone taken in the NFL draft. That's what players want to know."

Symphony Conductor Gives Advice to Ashland University Graduates

That was the challenge that Ashland Symphony conductor and music director Arie Lipsky presented to graduates during his commencement address at Ashland University’s Spring Commencement ceremony held on Saturday, May 5, at Miller Stadium in the University’s Schar Athletic Complex.

Spring Commencement a Special Moment for Euclid Resident

On May 5, 2012, Euclid resident Destinee Moore will be one of about 500 students who will walk across the stage to receive a diploma at Ashland University’s Spring Commencement. And while this will be a special moment for all of the graduates, it will be a little more special for Moore, who just five years ago was homeless and living in the City Mission shelter in Cleveland, Ohio.

Moore, who has accepted a job offer in his field with Aramark Corp., will receive his degree in hospitality management.

Ashland University to Launch Revised Graduate Program Focused on ‘Teaching and Learning for the 21st Century’

The field of teacher education is undergoing some dramatic changes and Ashland University, an institution that has been recognized as a leader in the field for more than 30 years, has taken steps to refocus its graduate education program.

“We see the changes taking place in education now and we recognize we need to make changes and develop new graduate programs that will allow us to offer more relevant programming for teachers,” said Dr. James Van Keuren, dean of Ashland University’s Schar College of Education.

Ashland University Institutes Paralegal Certificate Program

Ashland University’s Founders School of Continuing Education has instituted a weekend paralegal certificate program that will be offered on campus for the first time this summer.

“Paralegalism is one of the fastest growing careers in the country,” said Dwight McElfresh, dean of the Founders School. “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects the number of paralegals will increase 28 percent between 2008 and 2018, much faster than the national average for all occupations.”

Bruce Allen and Sam Rutigliano to Speak at Ashland University Dinner

Bruce Allen, the general manager of the Washington Redskins, and Sam Rutigliano, former coach of the Cleveland Browns, will both receive awards and will be the featured speakers at a dinner on May 15 at Ashland University’s John C. Myers Convocation Center.

Allen will receive the Ashland University Gridiron Club 2012 Sportsman of the Year Award, while Rutigliano will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award.

Arie Lipsky to Speak at Ashland University’s Spring Commencement

Arie Lipsky, a native of Haifa, Israel, and currently music director and conductor of the Ashland Symphony Orchestra, will present the address at Ashland University’s spring commencement ceremony set for 10 a.m. on May 5 in Miller Stadium, located at the Dwight Schar Athletic Complex off Broad Street.

Faculty and students who are participating in the ceremony are to assemble on the soccer field located southwest of Miller Stadium at 9 a.m. In the event of rain, the ceremony will be held in Kates Gymnasium and faculty and student lineup will be in the Conard Field House.
