A second licensure program for teachers seeking to teach students in grades K-12 with moderate/intensive needs for educational intervention. Our program prepares teachers to work in inclusive settings.
This program prepares teachers who already hold a valid Ohio teaching license to obtain a second Ohio license as an Intervention Specialist for students K-12 in Ohio’s schools who require Moderate-Intensive degrees of educational intervention to be successful in school.
Most classes are offered in the evenings on three campuses – Main, Columbus, and Elyria – so as to be convenient to the working graduate student. This program can be taken to obtain licensure as an ISMI alone or as a major with a graduate core of courses that lead to a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree.
Graduate students training to provide moderate to intensive levels of educational intervention are prepared to be inclusive educators in K-12 settings.
Skills in assessing learner needs, communicating with families, working collaboratively with educational professionals and other service providers, managing time and schedules for individual student needs, addressing and planning for transition from school to the community and documenting service provision and student progress are major parts of a graduate curriculum in this licensure program.
Training in directing and supervising Instructional Assistants and Personal Attendants, working collaboratively to provide supports for mobility, upper extremity use, reliable receptive and expressive communication, and appropriate public behavior are central to the curriculum in this licensure area.
Academic and technical skills required include knowledge of the Ohio Academic Content K-12 in Mathematics, Literacy, Science, and Social Studies. Extensive training in Assistive Technology and the Public Law with respect to the provision of education to students with disabilities round out the curriculum that must be mastered by candidates for this license.

Note: Online courses do not require students to attend classes at a graduate center. Hybrid courses are a combination of online and face-to-face classes. Hybrid and online sections of classes are not available for every course during every term. See the Graduate Course Rotations and the current Schedule of Graduate Course Offerings for additional information.
The Dwight Schar College of Education offers numerous licensure and endorsement programs that provide new career avenues for educators. Adding an endorsement to expand a current teaching license? Looking for a new area in which to teach? Considering an administrator’s license? Our programs, with their integration of theory and practice, meet the changing needs of educators.
The College of Education has been accredited by the National Council for the Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) for more than 30 years. Our programs have been approved by their recognized specialized professional associations and the State of Ohio. Many of the licensure and endorsement programs can lead to a Master’s degree. Begin with the endorsement or licensure program and eventually earn an additional degree.
The College of Education’s licensure and endorsement programs are offered at the Ashland campus, as well as four regional centers located in Columbus, Cleveland (Warrensville Heights), Elyria, and Massillon, OH. Courses are provided at the centers, online, and in hybrid (combined face-to-face and online) formats.
Ashland’s “Accent on the Individual” is a motto that represents how we do business. M.Ed. program directors at each center and the Director of Teacher Licensure and Testing review transcripts, assist with the application process, and advise students as they move through their programs. Within the classroom, our faculty believe that small class numbers, individualized attention, and quality instruction lead to purposeful learning experiences.
